SHIELDS MUSEUM COLLECTION

Mr. Arthur Shields was a collector of Gettysburg Civil War relics and memorabilia. He opened his museum in Gettysburg in 1925 and the museum featured many items recovered by Mr. Shields and others from the Battle of Gettysburg. The contents of the museum were sold in November, 1985 and most of the items are now in private collections. Recently I had the good fortune of purchasing some of these items from someone who was at the original sale 22 years ago.

Here's an excerpt from the November 17, 1985 Sunday News (by Jeffrey B. Roth): Gettysburg - The Civil War bullet-marked door of the McPherson Barn, part of the Shields collection in Gettysburg, sold for $3,000 Saturday at Redding's Auction, north of here on the Table Rock Road. C. David Redding, auctioneer and owner of the auction, said that there was an average of 775 to 800 people during the nine-hour auction. There were 550 items in the Civil War Collection of the Shields Museum auctioned...Redding said there were numerous bidding battles for the items, which included a Confederate blanket that sold for $1,650; $2,400 for a presentation sword; and up to $1,850 for a single rifle. A single British Whitworth Confederate cannon shell brought $1,600 and Confederate bullets brought as much as $220. Many of the items were excavated by Shields around Gettysburg...The museum closed recently fulfilling a sales agreement in which the Gettysburg National Military Park bought the land years ago.
