This is the nose section of a Dyer shell that was recovered on the McPherson farm in Gettysburg by William Brinkerhoff. It is listed on the original Shields Museum auction sheet as a "piece of shell with shell screw" and was in all likelyhood fired by U.S. cannon at advancing C.S. infantry on July 1, 1863. The relic is what it is - a portion of weaponary used during this most famous of three days in U.S. history.
