ABOUT US

I grew up listening to tales from my grandfather telling of his grandfathers exploits in 149th Pennsylvania "Bucktails" during the Civil War. Grandma's grandfather served in the 147th Pennsylvania - "Geary's White Stars". I read their diaries about battles in far away places such as Petersburg, Fredricksburg, Chancellorsville, and Antietam, but I most enjoyed reading about their fighting during the Battle of Gettysburg. As a child I would walk the battlefields while my grandfathers pointed out places of interest. My first experience at metal detecting was wearing a backpack with batteries and using a World War II surplus mine sweeper/detector. I still have some of the first relics I dug!

Currently I use a Mine Lab Metal Detector. I've recovered relics in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, the Carolinas, Mississippi, Tennessee and Louisiana. My main interest is in bullets, cartridges and artillery. I consider myself somewhat of an expert in those areas, but I am also knowledgeable about buttons, uniforms, and other Civil War items.

My wife, Paula, is descended from the famous Ohio Abolitionist Congressman, Joshua Reed Giddings. We collect Giddings items and currently have a first edition signed copy of his book "The Exiles of Florida", the Civil War discharge papers from his son Grotius Giddings, a copy of a speech he gave to Congress and old postcards from his law offices in Jefferson, Ohio.
